When the rabbit start baking, it was a therapy to help her pass time and relaxes whenever she got the insomnia. However along the time, her passion and love towards baking grow bigger and deeper because on top of the challenge to bake some good and delightful to loved one and friends, she also find the artist in her through baking, especially in her Japanese decorative roll cake. Her greatest pleasure is when she was able to accomplished the custom request design for friends or clients or whenever happy clients feedback on how much the recipient’s of the cake (mostly birthday boy/girl) enjoy their favorite image/character as well as eating the cake.
And it was a big surprise for her when she received an interview request about her decorative roll cake from NET TV , a local TV station here in Indonesia. At first she was hesitate of the fear being in-adequate since she start this as a hobby and it is still a small online business operating from her small kitchen. But then the nice lady reporter Ms. B convinced her that it was okay and they are really interested to get to know more about Rabbit’s decorative roll cake because it is something new, unique and interesting.
To cut it short, she said yes and below were some photo shoot of the session and the show was aired yesterday at the 12 o’clock noon at a program called NET12 (will provide the link once they upload it on the station website new’s episode).

What is the difference of today swiss roll compare to the other swiss roll posted in this blog? The answer is on it’s filling. Today swiss roll did not use butter cream or whipped cream but instead the self made yam paste.
Instead of making pattern roll, the rabbit try to implement the zebra cake technique of mixing 2 difeerent color of batter into the tin to make some zebra pattern. However it did not work well because she was too lazy to measure and balance the yam batter and the original batter properly, resulted to more yam batter. Hence below was the result, the zebra pattern where only created at the side of the roll.
While cleaning the kitchen, rabbit spotted some left over on her yam paste and decided to make another roll cake. Don’t you think this cute Totoro theme roll is just perfect ? The gray/purplish taro/yam color was great match for Totoro.
For the Yam Swiss roll
- 12 egg yolks
- 4 egg whites
- 90 gr sugar
- 70 gr cake flour
- 50 gr Coconut cream
- 50 gr corn oil
- Whisk eggs and sugar until ribbon stage (thick and pale)
- Sieve in cake flour and mix well and finally add in the melted butter and corn oil
- Use spatula to fold the batter evenly and then divided the batter into 2 bowl
- Add 1 table spoon of taro paste to the first mixture and mix well and leave the second as what it is
- Pour a ladle of white batter at the center of the tray and the top with a ladle of yam batter and repeat this process until both batter are finish
- Bake at 180C for 12 minutes or until cooked
Ingredients for Yam paste
- 300 gr of yam (cut into cubes)
- 60 gr sugar
- 90 gr coconut cream
Steam the yam until soft and smashed while still hot, mix in sugar and coconut cream. If you prefer finer texture, use food processor to blend the mixture until soft. (The rabbit use hand potato smasher to deliberately leave few chunks to add more texture to the paste)
In the case if you wonder what is Toroto? He is a character from Gibli studio anime “My neighbour Totoro”. Below were the bento made by the rabbit based on Totoro image.
Happy Monday all… wish you a great week ahead.
Monkichi seems to be rather popular, soon after he join her fellow friends in the character roll gallery, another order came in and it was from Mrs. T again but this time she order the rolls for her sister’s birthday.
Below please find the photos, HAPPY BIRTHDAY Ms. N
The nice Mrs T also order the mini lady bugs rolls for her niece/nephew and a rainbow roll for the family to share and celebrate.
The chocolate panda roll was an order from another friends Ms. WD for her weekend snacking while watching the Korean drama 😉
Below was a late post of yesterday order from Ms. A for herself and her friend, Hot balloons air roll and Strawberries roll.
HAPPY WEEKEND ALL!!!
I forgot to include this in my earlier post about my baking course. Below is one of the homework on swiss roll, the recipe called as Oil-free sponge roll.
- 40 gr + 80 gr sugar
- 4 eggs (separate yolks and whites)
- 30 gr cornflour
- 50 gr cake flour
- 1 tsp vanilla essence (optional)
- Whip yolks with 40 gr sugar until light and fluffy
- Whip egg whites with the rest 80 gr sugar till medium peak.
- Fold 1/3 of the egg whites into the yolk mixture.
- Fold in the sifted mixture alternate with some of whipped egg whites.
- Scrape the mixture into the lined tray and bake till cooked. (I used 190C for 15 minutes)
The result is a soft and delicious healthy roll, recommended to be consumed within 24 hrs after baking because despite the softness of the texture ,the cake was a bit dry due to lack of oil/fat.
And yes I use butter cream and chocolate chips as the filling (there goes the healthy oil free part),but if you are the health conscious one you can just spread fruit jam/jelly.
